So I'm generally not a big believer in New Years Resolutions. I usually feel that if you want to change something, you shouldn't need a certain day to do it--you should just do it. With that being said though, I've been dragging on diet and other things I've wanted to change for a while now, and so I am actually going to use the cliche and kick-start my new lifestyle changes with the coming of the new year.
As many people know, I haven't been known for my commitment to blogs. But I think that part of the reason I haven't really stuck with them is that I always felt as if I had to post every day without fail, and just like keeping a diary, it became more of a nuisance than a tool to log my progress and thoughts. So for this blog, I am setting my goals and updating it as often as I can without restrictions as to how often I update it.
2009 is going to be a very important year for me, since I will dedicate myself entirely to training with CrossFit. Since joining CFV, I have PRs in every single exercise/WOD, including first pullups and doubleunders. Now that I feel that I have a solid starting base when it comes to knowledge of movements, technique, and participating in WODs as Rx'd, I plan to train hard and hopefully really skyrocket in my progress.
Now for the good stuff...
I have many, MANY, weaknesses that need attention, but there are some that I really want to focus on.
-RUNNING!! Running is without a doubt my weakest area.
-HSPUs or Shoulder Press
-Wall-Balls
-Burpees
-Overhead Squats
-Dips
Most of these are ones that I've already planned to add to warm-ups/rest day practice/post-WOD practice, but in regards to running, I will also be adding some sprints/tabata runs once or twice a week.
After being sick for the first time in about three years, I am completely aware of the importance of diet (I've really fallen off the Zone/Paleo wagon for a long time now). The great thing is I'm going to be taking part in a Zone challenge! It should give me that extra motivation to stay on pace with everything. The way the challenge works is you get one point for every day you stay completely on the Zone, from Jan. 1. till sometime in April. The parameters I am setting for my Zone prescription are:
-10 blocks (baseline fat until performance starts to suffer).
-Starch/sugars only on weekends/occasions, but still keeping in Zone proportions.
I don't just want to improve in my physical fitness levels, but also in overall wellness. This year, I want to really get in much more sleep, reading, new music, and outdoor sports/activity. On days where I'm not working out the next morning, I plan to be in bed by 10 (an hour earlier if I am working out). In terms of reading, the first week of January will be spent studying for a test I need to take for my teaching credential. I'm always open to any new music someone would like to offer! I'm also going to add in a trail run once a week and look into how I might be able to participate in other things like Outrigger. More updates on that to come.
Now without seeming entirely anal, one last part of my new goals is to sort of plan out what I'm going to be doing each day in terms of CrossFit and recreation. That way it would be much easier to see and achieve what I want, rather than just say that I'll do it the next day. Everything will be listed under the "What am I doing today?" link, so people can see and hold me accountable =). Things may change depending on what the WOD was that day (e.g. if we did a lot of running one day and I had sprints planned, I'll shift things around), but in general I should stay pretty consistent.
I'm still pretty sick, so while the diet will definitely start January 1, training may not start till the first weekend, and trail runs not till the second weekend. Again, I'm not thinking in terms of a traditional New Years Resolution, but more of a way to...revamp =) REALLY excited to get into gear!!
